Pedestrian Safety and the use of the automatic rising / retractable bollard

May 3, 2011
Bollards in their static form are used extensively in most countries, most of which are found in public areas and shopping centres. The advent of the automatic rising / retractable telescopic bollard, a device which rises or retracts out of anf into the ground upon command, allows the tight integration of pedestrian traffic with that of the motor vehicle traffic, which often disregards pedestrian safety. Uses for the automatic and manual bollard include, shopping centre and office park vehicle access, pedestrian crossings, scholar patrols and pedestrian malls.

Are Automatic Rising Bollards Safe?

April 23, 2011

There are two issues with regard safety and the bollard, especially the automatic telescopic bollards. The first is, the Bollard needs to be installed in such a way that people are made aware of its presence, additionally people have to be educated, especially here in South africa, where this is a new concept. Secondly, peoples behaviour, application of the driving training and experience that the have, by implication if a driver has a licence it is assumed that the person is going to be on the lookout for obstacles and adhere to any traffic signs and control warnings. If a motorist tailgates a motorist in front and impact the bollard, surely this is a behavioural issue.
